The Columns - Bed & Breakfast

In Historic Chatham, Virginia

English boxwood line the walk of this
gracious Green revival home built in 1897 by
William Marshall Tredway.  White wicker
porch furniture and swings, along with huge
ferns and flower-filled planters, bedeck the
large gallery porch that wraps around three
sides of this 21-room home.  The central hall
features beautiful antique wallpaper imported
from England.  Carved mantels, wain-scoting
and trim fashioned from walnut, and a
colorful stained-glass window on the landing
of a massive stairwell enhance the charm
of the interior.  Sitting rooms are comfortably
furnished with antique sofas.

Four bedrooms feature antique beds,
including a carved walnut Murphy bed and
handsome chests representing many design
periods.  An upstairs tea room with a bay
window offers a private place to relax.  On
the grounds are several interesting
dependencies, including a carbide house,
old servants quarters, and the foundations
of what was once a stable.  The original
kitchen, which was later attached to the
present house, retains the original knotty
pine walls and huge hand hewn beams.

Chatham's oldest operating Bed and Breakfast,
The Columns is a cozy welcoming haven
for travelers passing through historic Chatham
or families visiting the two local academies.
The atmosphere is charming and southern
offering passersby a home away from home.
Since the 1920's, The Columns has been
welcoming guests with Southern Hospitality &
charm.  Andrew & Staci Wall are second generation
Innkeepers carrying on the long-standing traditions
that make The Columns so special.

"I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence;
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
